AmCham Women in business event with Alison Mau talking about her memoir, No Words for This
As a young girl growing up in suburban Melbourne, Ali Mau wanted to be a journalist like her dad. After her first job at The Warracknabeal Herald, she went on to work in some of Australia’s most influential newsrooms in the 80s and 90s. These included the Herald Sun and top TV news station, Channel 9. In the noughties, Ali built a prolific career as one of New Zealand’s most recognisable media personalities, co-hosting shows such as Breakfast, Seven Sharp, Fair Go and RadioLIVE.
A conversation with her sister forty years in the making prompted Ali to reconsider her buried past. As the leading advocate for New Zealand’s #MeToo movement, Ali confronted the questions so many others had to face about accountability and the shape justice takes. In No Words for This, Ali brings her gift for telling stories to her own courageous and multi-faceted life. She writes with remarkable candour about her early life, her personal and professional mid-life reinvention, and the challenges of a career in the media as a female. Her intimate memoir is a powerful testament to taking control and reshaping your reality.
‘Writing this book scared me at times’, says Ali. ‘Those necessary decisions about what to include and how much to tell, seemed so huge. Delving into the really painful parts of my life had me snapping the laptop shut at times, and coming back when the adrenaline had died down a bit! In the end, the gentle encouragement of family and friends was everything. And as I wrote I could feel the hundreds of survivors who’ve brought their stories to me over the years, right there with me. The bravery they all showed made me think, maybe it’s time to tell mine.’
